Kalonzo Turns Down Mashujaa Day Invitation

Kalonzo Musyoka Rejects Invitation to 2025 Mashujaa Day Celebrations in Kitui County

Kalonzo Musyoka has rejected an invitation to attend the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled to take place in Kitui County.

The Wiper Party leader, who is a vocal critic of President William Ruto, turned down the offer while addressing Mwingi North residents. This came after County Commissioner Kipchumba Ruto extended the invitation — allegedly without Kalonzo’s prior knowledge.

I want to make it clear that I will not be attending, but the President and others have every right to attend the national function,’Kalonzo stated.

Understanding Mashujaa Day

Mashujaa Day, previously known as Kenyatta Day, is celebrated every 20th of October following the promulgation of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution. It remains one of the country’s most significant national holidays, meant to honor the heroes (mashujaa) who played a key role in the struggle for freedom, development, and unity.

Heroes such as Dedan Kimathi, Mekatilili wa Menza, and Jomo Kenyatta are among those celebrated on this day.

What Does Kalonzo’s Absence Mean for President Ruto and His Allies?

Kalonzo’s decision to skip the event — especially in his home county — raises serious political questions.

Currently in the opposition, Kalonzo has been aligning himself with like-minded leaders, including Rigathi Gachagua (who was recently impeached as Deputy President), George Natembeya, Fred Matiang’i, and Martha Karua. This could be an early signal of a broader political alliance forming ahead of the 2027 elections.

Is Kalonzo Protecting His 2027 Presidential Bid?

With 2027 fast approaching, Kalonzo seems to be making deliberate moves to solidify his position as a serious presidential contender. Attending a state event led by a government he strongly criticizes could risk confusing his support base.

By rejecting the invitation, Kalonzo may be aiming to maintain political clarity and avoid sending mixed signals at a time when loyalties are shifting and alliances are forming.

This may not be just about Mashujaa Day — it could be the start of a rebranding journey ahead of the next presidential race.
