Ruto Rewards Harambee Stars with KSh42 Million After DRC Victory as Focus Shifts to Angola Clash
President William Ruto has fulfilled his promise to reward the national football team, Harambee Stars, with a total of KSh42 million following their 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday.
State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed confirmed on Monday that each of the 27 players will receive KSh1 million, with an equal amount going to each of the 15 members of the technical bench. The total payout, amounting to KSh42 million, is aimed at recognising the team’s determination and hard work in securing the crucial win.

“This is a testament to the President’s commitment to motivating our sportsmen and women to excel and bring glory to the country,” Hussein said in a statement issued from Nairobi.
The narrow but decisive victory over DRC has been hailed as one of the most significant results for Kenya in recent months, boosting the team’s morale ahead of their next challenge. On Thursday, Harambee Stars will take on Angola in a crucial fixture. Angola, fresh from a 2-0 defeat to Morocco on Sunday, will be eager to redeem themselves, promising a high-stakes encounter for both sides.
Sports analysts say Kenya’s reward system is part of a growing regional trend where governments are using financial incentives to inspire sporting excellence. In neighbouring Uganda, authorities have announced a substantial pledge to award the Uganda Cranes KSh42 million to each player should they secure a landmark victory in their ongoing campaign.
The move has sparked conversations about the role of monetary rewards in motivating athletes and boosting performance on the international stage. Supporters of the approach argue that such incentives help players remain focused and push beyond their limits, while critics caution that success in sports should not be tied solely to financial bonuses.
For Harambee Stars, however, the President’s gesture is both a recognition of their recent success and a challenge to sustain their winning momentum. The team’s performance against DRC demonstrated resilience, tactical discipline, and the ability to grind out results under pressure — qualities they will need to replicate against Angola.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming match, Kenyan fans are optimistic that the financial boost will inspire another stellar performance, edging the country closer to its long-term football ambitions. The big question remains: will the Government of Kenya maintain this level of support for sports in the future?
