According to the ICT CS, the Government has started manufacturing the smartphones at the Konza Technopolis plant in Malili, Machakos County and will have fully loaded Android capacity. Speaking during an interview with one of the local TV channels, CS Owalo said that the telcoms have finally realised that in the near future, Kenya must join developed Nations to become a manufacturer of phones and cheap technology as opposed to a chief importer.
According to Owalo, President William Samoei Arap Ruto has already imported the technology that will be used. He said that the first made- in- Kenya phones will retail at around USD 40 ( Ksh4, 000 and Ksh5, 000) as had ordered by President William Samoei Arap Ruto.
According to Cabinet Secretarty who took over from Joe Mucheru, the mass production of the smartphones have already began, and the first batch will be available for purchase by August 2023.
CS Owalo Revealed that the government has partnered with American tech giant, Google to ensure that smartphones will have basic features that will enable the users to call, text, timing and calendar applications.
The phones just like other smartphones, will allow the users to install other mobile secondary applications however, they will run three types of mobile apps- namely native, web, and hybrid applications.
This comes days after President William Samoei Arap Ruto had told Kenyans that his administration will be Manufacturing cheap smartphones that will target hustlers across the forty seven counties. President William Ruto further added that this will make Kenya the only country in the entire East African Community, EAC to offer such affordable phones.
